If it’s inner peace or rejuvenation of your work-fatigued body you are after, head off for an uplifting experience in Jeju. The pristine nature and beautiful scenery of Jeju will surely heal your body and bring back your tranquility. The trekking paths may be a little hilly but they are just hard enough to make you feel energized and refreshed, which is precisely why it attracts returning visitors all year round. As the old saying goes, 'to see for oneself is worth all the books of travel.' Now let’s close the travel books and take the plunge to find your serenity in Jeju! • Travel Tip – Transportation! When traveling around Jeju Island, it is more efficient to rent a car than to use public transportation. For information on how to rent a car in Korea, visit http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/TRP/TP_ENG_8_3.jsp. The travel time for each of the destinations below is based on traveling by car.

  • Morning exercise at Hallasan National Park

Standing at the heart of Jeju Island, Hallasan Mountain is the tallest mountain in Korea. There are a total of 7 trekking trails on the mountain, with courses to Baengnokdam Lake at the peak, Witseoreum and Nambyeok Junction.

Eorimok Trail is the most popular course, starting from Hallasan National Park’s Visitor Center, passing Eorimok Valley and Witseoreum Shelter to Nambyeok Junction. The length of the trail is 6.8km and it takes about six hours round trip. With luck, hikers may even get a glimpse of roe deer grazing in the pasture. In May of each year, the trail from Eorimok to Janggumok is beautiful with royal azaleas in full bloom, just in time for the Hallasan Mountain Royal Azalea Festival.

  • Ride a raft at Soesokkak Estuary

The name Soesokkak originated from the Jeju dialect for “a cow lying by a pond.” Here, dark blue water steaming down from the valley meets the ocean, creating a fascinating scene with unique-looking rocks and stones before a background of pine trees. At low tide, underwater jets can be seen shooting out of crevices in the rocks.

Of course walking through the valley along the trail is beautiful, but you can make your trip even more special by crossing the estuary on teu, a traditional raft, or renting a transparent kayak to get an even closer look at the water. The teu is pulled across the stream along a submerged rope every 30 minutes. While riding on the teu is a traditional experience sure to delight, the transparent kayaks are so popular you will need to make a reservation early in the morning if you want a chance to ride in one.
